How to Find Work You Actually Love

Loving your work is not a personality trait. It's a design problem. Here's the design.

The lie of "follow your passion"

Passion follows mastery, not the other way round. Chasing passion without competence produces hobbyists with resentments.

The three-layer test

Work you love sits at the intersection of:

  • Competence — you're measurably good, or on a steep curve.
  • Autonomy — you decide how, when, and with whom.
  • Meaning — someone specific is better off because you showed up.

Miss any one and the work slowly becomes a chore.

Design, don't discover

Stop waiting to stumble on the perfect role. Take your current job and redesign it:

  • Drop or delegate the 20% that drains you most.
  • Double the 20% that gives you the most energy.
  • Negotiate one new responsibility that scares you slightly.

Do this every quarter. Within two years, most people are doing radically different work — at the same company.

When to leave

Leave when your growth curve has flatlined for 12 months and your manager has stopped being curious about you. Not before.
